How to Build the Life God Planned for You {Unless the Lord Builds the House Bible Study}

In our hustle and fast-paced culture, it’s easy to become obsessed with working and building. Everywhere you turn, you see a coach, or speaker, or leader promising to teach you how to build a life, business, or career you love. There’s nothing wrong with building, but a serious problem arises when we think we are called to build, and create, and work on our own. We mistakenly think the building and the results are up to us, leaving many pressured, stressed, and frustrated. But this is not what God intended for us. Psalm 127:1 says:

But first, let’s talk about what it means to build. The word “build” in today's verse means to establish or to cause to continue. It’s starting a work and then adding to it with the intention of making something new or renewing something old. When we think of building our lives, it’s the collection of our time, resources, and energy to obtain an end result.

Maybe that end result is a healthier body, financial freedom, completion of a project, mastering a skill, or raising a family. Whatever your end goal is, building requires the addition of resources, one on top of another, to accomplish a desired outcome.

Build on a Good Foundation 

Today's verse reveals the first and most important step to building that, too often we overlook. It reminds me of when my husband and I were building our first home. We would often drive out to the build site often after work and on weekends to see the progress our new home was making, and for weeks it didn’t look like anything was happening, although construction had already started. All we would see was a slab of concrete, a few pieces of wood, and some pipes sticking up out of the ground. If felt like it would take forever and I found myself wondered when the real building and construction would get started, not knowing that it was during this time that the most important work was being done and that was the building of the foundation of the house.

The foundation of a home is the part of the house that holds the weight of the structure. It’s the load bearing portion of the house and does two important things. The first is to support the house and the second is to keep out water. If the foundation is compromised the entire house is at risk of destruction.

As Christians God must be the foundation of anything we build. If he’s not, we risk losing what we build. This is because, God is the only One who can carry the weight of the work we’re called to do and provide the protection we need as we move forward and gain more. We see so many people start things they can’t finish because God is not the foundation, they are. So even before we start to build a life or business or family we love we must ask ourselves, is God in this? Did He establish it?  Did He call us to this. If He did,  we knew this is a work that will last. We don’t have to fear working in vain or waiting our time even whe we’re woking and don see progress yet. But, if God is not the foundation we’re not building a life we can love, we’re building a life we can lose.  

Jesus says it this way in Matthew 7:24-27:

What are you building your life upon? The pattern of this world? What’s popular and trendy? Or are you building your life on what lasts, the truth and promises of God. Too often we start building without God and then ask for His help when things go wrong. But we need Him involved from the beginning. We need God to establish the work we are doing and then build on that. How do we do that?

How to Build a Strong Foundation  

We involve Him in the process. We pray and ask for His leadership. We follow His way, and if you don’t know His way, read His Word. He’s given us a clear blueprint for life right in these pages. His word provides a way of living that establishes a strong foundation for a good life worth building upon. Because here’s the truth, there is work to do. Now, wheather that work is in vein or on purpose depends on if God has called us to that work but let’s be clear, all the work is not on God and we just sit back and do nothing. That’s not how it works. 

Building With God

1 Corinthians 3:9 says:

As co-workers with God, we must understand we’re not just building the life of our dreams, but instead, we work with God to build His dream for us. 

If we build by ourselves our work won’t last. If we only leave it up to God and don’t do our part we miss the fruit of building on what God has established. Then, we may have strong foundation but there nothing on it. So just as much as building is not only up to us, it’s also not only up to God.

Once the foundation of our new how was established and set, our trips to see the construction of our house change drastically. Each time we traveleds to the home site we saw something new; first the frame was up, then the the roof was on, then the drywall was painted, and next thing we new we were moving in. The point of building is progress and we seee this clearly in today scripture. First, a house is build. Then a city.  First God builds the house, than He watches over a city which is multiple houses and buildings. 

This process of building with God is ongoing. It’s what we’re called to to do. We’re call to build, to be co-working with God as the scripture told us. The end goal of our building is the process of our woking with God in everything that we’re called to do.  

In his book “Garden City” John Mark Comer makes the point that while mankind started in a garden we were called to subdue the earth and make cities. He says:

Yes God establishes the work, so that means we have work and building and creating to do. That’s our call and it doesn’t stop at one home or building. It’s a life long process of using the resources God has entrusted us to make His kingdom known here on earth. There will be seasons of building and there will be seasons of watching over what we’ve build and God will strengthen us to do the work and protect what we build for Him.
